Artist Ten: Andrew Myers

Why this Artist?
I found Andrew Myers in my search for artists that use everyday and regular objects to create artworks.  I was quickly drawn to Myers work in particular because he not only spent hours putting each individual nail into the wall, he made sure to keep them at different heights and paint them in a realistic way.  This work is unlike a lot of others I have seen so I wanted to take the time to talk about the artist.

Here are my favorites by this artist:

Who is this Artist?
Andrew Myers was born in Braunshweig, Germany but now lives in Laguna Beach, California.  He studied at the Laguna College of Art.  Myers work has been featured in many publications including American Lifestyle, Lamono Magazine, McGrath Magazine, Sculptural Pursuit, H Magazine, Coastline, Orange Coast and Laguna Beach Mag.  Although he is best known for his screw pieces he works in many mediums including paintings, drawing and sculpture.  This artist only produces about five to ten pieces a year because of how time and work intensive each of his installations is, however he is still successful because of how well he has mastered his medium.

What does he do?
Myers creates many artworks but is best know for his screw art.  According to his website:
"One of the artist’s favorite memories was watching a blind man experience his work for the first time. As the man ran his hands over a large three-dimensional portrait tediously constructed with tens of thousands of screws over hundreds of man hours, his blank expression suddenly transformed into a warm smile. He could feel what others could only see."
Myers works are very intricate and take a very ling to complete.  He makes sure to place the screws at different lengths and paints them one by one to create the realistic coloring of his subjects.  He likes using objects and materials that are not usually considered art.  This artist creates intricate works and is very dedicated to his craft.

Why he inspires me?
The artist inspires me because of the way he thinks outside the box and the amount of dedication he puts into his work.  I can only hope that I will put as much thought and work into each of my individual senior seminar pieces.  Myers is an inspiration because he started with an idea and continues to try master and perfect it with every work he does.  He is always trying to be better and that is something I can relate to.
