Artist Seven: Scott Gustafson

Why this Artist?
I stumbled upon this artist on Pinterest a couple years ago and very quickly fell in deep love with his amazing illustrations.  He creates fantastical images based on fairy tales, classic stories and myths and by this point we know I love all those things.  Gustafson creates realistic looking images of imaginary scenes and his drawing skills are amazing.

It was hard to narrow down, but here are some of my favorites:

Little Red Riding Hood by Scott Gustafson
A Mad Tea Party by Scott Gustafson
The Fight Scene by Scott Gustafson
 Who is this Artist?
Gustafson received his masters in animation from the Chicago Academy of  Fine Arts.  He has illustrated quite a few books and has done work for companies such as Celestial Seasonings, Playboy Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, The Bradford Exchange, Dreamworks and the Greenwich Workshop.  He was awarded a Chesley award for best interior book illustrator from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists and has had a very successful career.

What does he do?
Gustafson illustrates classical stories, fairy tales and nursery rhymes.  He does this using a realistic style even though they are fantastical and fictional scenes. Gustafson mainly uses paint and drawing techniques to create his artworks.  His images are very ornate and detailed and have a magic feel to them.  I love the naturalistic lighting and well drawn human figures.

Why he inspires me?

This artist inspires me because of the amount of work and detail he puts into his illustrations.  I am one that loves to pay attention and add the tiniest of details so this is something that I really appreciate.  The small patterns and realistic fabric textures and other textures, the attention he pays to the lighting and even the emotions on the character's faces is something to truly be admired.  I really appreciate the way the artist is able to bring these scenes to life almost as if they are occurring in front of you instead of in the pages of your book. Gustafson honors classical stories in his artworks and does a marvelous job.

Some of my other favorites are below, if you would like to see more from this artist please visit: http://www.scottgustafson.com/Portfolio_FT1.html.
