Artist Eight: Jean Shin

Why this Artist?
This artist was another that I found somewhere on the internet and thought was amazing.   The way she used everyday objects to create these giant instillations was something that intrigued me a lot.  She has used materials from pill bottles to keys to random fabrics and so so many other materials.

Here are some examples of her work although to get a better idea of what each of her pieces looks like I highly recommend visiting her site (I have link it near the bottom):

Who is this Artist?
Jean Shin is nationally known for her instillations.  Her work has been exhibited in national and international museums and she has had solo exhibitions at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona, Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC, The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, and Projects at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  She has also had a very large number of other venues inside and outside of the United States.  Shin was born in South Korea and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture for her Bachelors degree and got her Masters from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn,  She currently lives and works in New York City.

What does she do?

Shin creates these monumental installations made of everyday objects.  She transforms these objects into expressions of identity and community.  A lot of the items she receives are donated to her and she spends long hours putting these together.  This artist engages the community into her pieces by using the donated objects as a reflection of individual people's lives and shows how they go together in her pieces by creating a form of society.

Why she inspires me?
This artist is such a great example of a female artist that is extremely successful.  She is also an example of someone that works very hard and creates art with inspiration from her everyday life.  I only hope I can create art and see art within all aspects of my life and everything around me.  Jean Shin also inspires me because she has been able to travel around the world with her pieces which highlights the idea that art certain types of art can relate to all people and be appreciated.  Jean Shin is such a strong female artist and she creates some very intricate and large scale pieces that are simply breathtaking.

Some more of her works are below but gain I highly encourage you to visit the website to see close ups of some of these instillations and her other works that I have not posted: http://www.jeanshin.com/index.htm.
