Artist Fifty: Carol Rossetti

Why this Artist?
Rossetti may not be one of the more well known artists I have written about (although her "Women" works are actually spreading very quickly across the internet) but I have decided to make her my final artist because she shares a lot of similar ideas with me and has also illustrated posters that address women (like I plan to do).  Rossetti's works have a message and this is something that I admire quite a bit.

Here are just a few of Rossetti's illustrations:

Babi by Carol Rossetti
Clara by Carol Rossetti
Helena by Carol Rossetti
Who is this Artist?
Carol Rossetti is a Brazilian graphic designer and illustrator so a lot of her works begin in Portuguese but are than translated into many different languages including English, Hebrew and soon Spanish, Russian, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Lithuanian.  This is important because Rossetti wants to share her messages with people all over the world.  Rossetti's works are becoming increasingly popular online and although she hasn't shown works in any galleries or museums they are still having a very profound effect and inspiring people world wide.

What does she do?
Rossetti illustrates empowering images of women and their stories.  Each image is originally in Portuguese and then translated into many other languages, a process that involves Rossetti rewriting each language's new text manually to keep her style.  This artist's works are inspired by a lot of issues including feminism, racism, ableism, LGBT issues and many more.  Rossetti hand draws each of her images and keeps them all on the same color and type of material so it is clear they are all from one body of work.  I think what is most amazing to me though is how her works are being translated into many languages because they can all apply to women all over the world.

Why she inspires me?
This artist inspires me because she has a voice and is not afraid to share it and not just in Brazil but all over the world in many different languages.  Rossetti sees flaws in the way society is run all over the world and creates images that address these issues.  She is an inspiration to me because she is trying to make a difference and is using her talents and her artwork to do this.  She is making people aware and inspiring people with her art and I only hope that I can do this someday with my own.

Some more of Rossetti's works can be seen all over the internet but also on her facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/carolrossettidesign

Artist Forty-Nine: Tatyana Fazlalizadeh

Why this Artist?
This artist was shared with me by my professor and right away I knew I wanted to make her one of my fifty artists.  Her "Stop Telling Women to Smile" posters designed to address street harassment of women was something that I truly admired as well as her amazing artwork.  This artist is one that uses her artwork to try and make a difference and that is something I hope to do in the future.

Here are three of Fazlalizadeh's posters from her "Stop Telling Women to Smile" campaign:

Women Are People not Just Bodies by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh
Nuala, Philadelphia, 2013 by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh
Deanna, Chicago, 2013 by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh
Who is this Artist?
Tatyana Fazlalizadeh is a Brooklyn based artist.  She has had a countless number of exhibitions in cities all over the United States as well as held lectures and been in many publications with her works.  She has even been in The New York Times and the Huffington Post.  This artist is growing in popularity and is trying to create a difference through her artworks and I am looking forward to more of her exhibitions.

What does she do?
This artist works in a variety of mediums ranging from drawing, painting, photography, video and collage.  Most of her works are portraits of real people and she loves creating works that have a purpose.  Fazlalizadeh has created art inspired by protests, gay rights, women's rights and is truly an activist with her art.  She is an artist trying to make a difference and that is something that is amazing to me.

Why she inspires me?
The artist inspires me because she paints and draws very beautiful and touching portraits but because she realizes that she can help make a change in the world and uses her talent to do so.  Fazlalizadeh is not just creating art, she is creating it with a purpose.  She is talking about it, getting it out into the world and sharing it all over so it has a better chance at actually making a change.  I think this artist is so inspiring to me because she has a voice and is not afraid to plaster it all over the country and probably, eventually all over the world.

This artist has created works other than her famous "Stop Telling Women to Smile" posters so if you would like to see more, you know what to do: http://www.tlynnfaz.com/

Artist Forty-Eight: Tim Burton

Why this Artist?
I picked this artist because I have always loved his works but also because he has such a unique style and has never allowed anything to stop him from illustrating using that style.  Even though his works are very different and not everyone appreciated them early on, he stuck by his style and used his uniqueness to become an extremely well known artist.

Burton has produced a countless amount of artworks so I have picked some that I enjoyed from his website:

Little Dead Ridinghood by Tim Burton
Untitled (Cartoon Series) by Tim Burton
Untitled (Cartoons Drawing) by Tim Burton

Who is this Artist?
Tim Burton attended CalArts in Valencia, California which lead to a job as an animator at The Walt Disney World Company but then bloomed into a career making featured films for Warner Bros, Disney and a few other companies.  He is know all over the world and his artwork can be found in many private collections and other museums and galleries including the Museum of Modern Art.  Recently, Burton's works were even collected into a book titled "The Art of Tim Burton".  Burton is a very famous artist, he has created many different types of works and has a very recognizable style.

What does he do?
This artist creates works in many forms ranging from collage, drawings, paintings, polaroids, sculpture, film, posters and writing.  His style is unique as he creates very eerie and dark characters and images.  He focuses on a surreal realm and the obscure in his works and uses vivid colors and a lot of shadows to create a darkness to each one.  Tim Burton has a way of taking the dark and eerie and making it almost playful and light which makes him a very unique artist.

Why he inspires me?
The artist inspires me because of how dedicated he is to his own style and unafraid to be different.  I know a lot of the time with my artwork I am very critical and wish I could create it using entirely someone else's style.  I become critical when I should be making it my own and be unafraid of making it unique.  Burton is an example to me of someone that isn't afraid to pull anything and everything from his imagination, no matter how other people perceive it, and this is something I want to imitate.

Edward Scissor Hands by Tim Burton

Artist Forty-Seven: Ïve Bastrash

Why this Artist?
Although this artist is mostly known in the world of the internet, his style is something that inspires me because he takes well known characters and movie covers and converts them into his own style.  For my senior seminar project I will also be converting well known people into my style (in poster form) so looking at Bastrash's works will help me do this.

Some of my favorite movie posters that Bastrash has illustrated in his own style are:

Raiders of the Lost Ark by Ïve Bastrash
BeetleJuice by Ïve Bastrash
Batman Returns by Ïve Bastrash
Sleepy Hollow by Ïve Bastrash
Who is this Artist?
Canadian artist Ïve Bastrash is currently living in Toronto and working as the lead 2D artist for a mobile-game company.  Bastrash graduated with full honours from the Université du Québec in Gatineau with a major in comic books.  Afterwards he traveled to Bordeaux, France to study 2D Animation.  He then used his talents to create many illustrations, comics, and even his own playing cards.  This artist is still working on becoming well known but his unique style and especially his movie cover remakes, are helping him become an even more successful artist.

What does he do?
This artist illustrates many things ranging from comic book projects, graphic novels, custom playing cards and other illustration assignments.  He creates storyboards, does character design, has been in some art exhibitions, and creates video game art.  Bastrash's illustrations all have a similar style and all his characters a similar look.  His posters are all made using a comic/poster style, which is something I am looking into for my own projects.  The artist likes to recreate well known movie covers as well as create his own unique illustrations and characters.  I personally enjoy his style a lot and look forward to seeing more of his works in the future.

Why he inspires me?
Bastrash is inspiring to me and to my work because he is taking well known images and making them his own.  For my senior project I will be taking well known women and illustrating them in my own style and adding my own twist to them so Bastrash and I have a lot in common.  I hope by looking at this artist's works I can get a better idea of what I want to do for my project.  I hope to come up with my own style and learn how to create works using the comic/poster style that Bastrash uses.  This artist is inspirational to me because he has done some of the things I am planning to do and I admire him for it.

Artist Forty-Six: Danielle Richard

Why this Artist?
This artist is on my list for two main reasons.  The first reason being that her paintings are beautiful and do an excellent job reflecting emotion and real life women and the second being that most of her painted subjects are female and my senior seminar project subjects are also going to be female.

Just a few of Richard's spectacular works are below:

Jeu D'eau by Danielle Richard
Jardin Secret by Danielle Richard
Barque en Dérive by Danielle Richard
Who is this Artist?
Based in Québec, Danielle Richard has shown her work all over the world in different collections and solo and collective exhibitions.  She has also received many awards and been in countless publications.  Richard received her Diploma of Collegial Studies in Plastic Arts and Bachelor's Degree in Visual Arts.  She also took a semester of Stone Lithography, a semester of Drawing and Watercolor at Oxford University and took "En plein Air Masters" with C.W. Mundy in France.  Richards is becoming a very popular artist and her work is being seen in more and more places all over the globe.

What does she do?
According to her website, Richard's work "demonstrates a quest for beauty, its guiding principle.  It reflects moments of silence and peace inspired by life away from tumult." Richard paints "the eternal feminine.. the one that best displays the emotions she favors."  Richard paints mainly female subjects in the mediums of pastels, acrylic paint and oil paint.  her works have a very realistic feel to them and aim to be timeless.  One thing that I enjoy about Richard's pieces is the way she creates lighting on each figure and the areas surrounding them.  She is excellent at creating texture and reflections in her works and placing highlights and shadows where they need to be.

Why she inspires me?
Richard's work can help me with my own by teaching me more about lighting and by helping me illustrate female characters, as this is mostly what Richard does.  By looking at this artist's works I can better understand the proportions and forms of the female character and especially how different types of lighting interact with them.  Richard's art is beautiful and she really does do an excellent job portraying the emotions of each character in her work.

Artist Forty-Five: Daryl Gortner

Why this Artist?
Although I am not planning on doing photorealistic painting for my project, Gortner's works are inspiring to me not only because I admire that she is capable of getting things to a photorealistic point (Because I definitely cannot) but because looking at her works will help me understand a little bit more about how to create lighting in images, draw certain shapes and how to create interesting compositions.

Here are some of Gortner's works:

For Keeps by Daryl Gortner
Sugar and Spice by Daryl Gortner
Intoxicating by Daryl Gortner
Who is this Artist?
Daryl Gortner attended Fullerton College and currently teaches art classes for adults and kids at the City of Brea Art Gallery.  She has been in a large number of art exhibitions all over California and in different countries.  Gortner has also been in a number of publications and has earned a countless number of awards all over the place including a finalist in "Artist Magazine and International Artist Magazine".  This artist has been attracting admirers and patrons all over the country with her works and is becoming even more successful as time goes by.

What does she do?
Gortner creates large proportional sized paintings in a photorealistic style.  Her paintings are made with layers upon layers of paint and glaze to create the intense depth and richness found in each one.  Her works are predominantly made using oil paint on linen or birch panels primed with several coats of gesso.  As for the subjects of her artworks, this artist finds inspiration from things around her.  She has mastered turning the ordinary into the extraordinary and this is clear through the clarity of her works.

Why she inspires me?
This artist inspires me because through her works I can learn a lot about how to create depth in my works and how to play with light.  A lot of her works also allow me to understand a little more about how to create reflections and interesting compositions using everyday objects.  She is also a prime example of how taking your time on a piece of work can only be a benefit as she can spend up to multiple months completing just one piece.  Someday I want to be willing to spend as much time and effort on each artwork as Gortner does.  She is a very dedicated artist and I admire that a lot.

Artist Forty-Four: Lissy Elle

Why this Artist?
Lissy Elle is an amazing photographer that can bring the surreal to life.  Her photos are whimsical and magical and something to truly be admired.  She has created an entire world of her own through her artwork and this is something that I would enjoy doing someday as well.

There were so many fantastic images by this artist, it was hard to pick only a few to share but here are  some that I liked the best:

Get Back in Your Book Alice by Lissy Elle
Fragility by Lissy Elle
The Play Pretend Princess by Lissy Elle

Who is this Artist?
This artist is a self-taught photographer that has been taking pictures since a very young age.  Currently located in New York but traveling around the country to take photographs, Elle is becoming more and more of a popular photographer.  She has won awards in multiple countries and has been in many publications throughout the world.  She has also had exhibitions in multiple countries.  Elle's work is spreading around the world and it won't be too long before it is all over.

What does she do?
Lissy Elle creates photographs that bring her imaginary world to life.  She shoots her images using a Nikon D90 with a 30mm or 50mm lens.  According her her website, Elle's process is to first decide on a concept, scout out a location, fill it with a model, props, and after shooting for one or two hours spend three to seven more working in photoshop and doing her other post-processing.  Elle's works are inspired by childhood and childish things, she loves exploring and bringing to life, through her photographs, things that people only see in their imaginations and she does it very successfully in my opinion.

Why she inspires me?
This photographer is inspiring to me because she isn't afraid to create whatever happens to be on her mind that day.  What do I mean by that?  I mean Lissy Elle will literally look at an object, decide she wants to create a photograph using it and do it.  There is no question or doubting herself, it's just her and her imagination.  I hope that someday I can have the same artistic umph that Elle has and make the impossible possible like she does.

Artist Forty-Three: Ken Taylor

Why this Artist?
Besides the fact that Ken Taylor creates some amazing posters that I am in love with, his poster style is another that I have been looking to use for my Senior Seminar project. Although he works mainly in the music industry designing posters, his style is a large inspiration to me and my own work so I have decided to make him artist forty-three.

Some of Taylor's works that I like the best are:

The Black Keys by Ken Taylor
Kachou Fuugetsu by Ken Taylor
Haru by Ken Taylor
Who is this Artist?
This artist is based in Melbourne, Australia and is predominantly known for his rock posters and his work within the music industry.  What started out as doing random posters and album artwork for local bands quickly grew to much more.  Now Taylor not only creates work for major Australian Bands but he has also created work for internationally known bands like Metallica, Peal Jam, Nine Inch Nails, The Rolling Stones, Queens of the Stone Age, Kings of Leon and Bob Dylan.  Taylor has won many award for his work including the Desktop Create Award for Best Illustration two different years and has also exhibited and visited conferences with his work all over the world.  This artist continues to work with bands all over both locally and internationally.

What does he do?
Taylor's artworks have a very nice poster style to them and a lot of detail.  He is known for his limited edition silkscreened movie posters, album covers and artwork.  He works with different printing techniques as well as with acrylic paints.  Taylor's art ranges from pieces with bright and a large range of colors to works that have little or no color.  His posters usually have a dark outline around each shape and he uses different thicknesses of lines and shapes to create textures, tones and details in each of his images (Something I will try to do in my posters).

Why he inspires me?
The artist inspires me because his works are in one of the styles I have considered to use for my own project.  The small details and different sections of color and lines to create textures and tones is something I can look at and try to imitate.  One thing that is particularly interesting to me about Taylor's work is the way he manages to create shadows and highlights on his posters by simply using different shapes and colors.  Ken Taylor's works are going to help me a lot while trying to form posters of my own so I am very happy I found his website.

Some of Taylor's movie based posters are really neat and because I am a movie lover I have attached some below.  To see more of his works please feel free to visit: http://kentaylor.com.au/
