Artist Thirteen: Jen Stark

Why this Artist?
Jen Stark is one of the artists that I found by accident and right away I loved her work because she creates some unbelievable paper sculptures.  This isn't all that Stark does, she also does some drawings and animations, however I will be focusing on her sculptures.  I was really drawn to Stark because I love creating intricate things out of paper but the way she does this is way better and bigger than anything I have ever and probably could ever do.

Here are some of my favorites:

Who is this Artist?
Jen Stark is a Los Angeles-based artist that has had her work in a number of solo exhibits in places all over the United States and Canada and in group exhibitions all over the world.  She received her BFA in fibers with an animation concentration from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore MD.  She also attended the Center for Art and Culture in the Aix-en-Provence of France.  This artist has won a variety of awards and has collections in museums all over the United States that even include the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian in Washington DC.  Stark is famous for her sculptures, however she also does some amazing pen drawings and award winning animations.

What does she do?
Stark creates intricate sculptures predominantly out of paper, however she also uses a few other materials such as foam board, wood and acrylic paint to form her works.  The artist loves playing with depth perception and trying to mess with the viewer's mind.  She uses flashy colors and intricate patterns to lead the eye across each piece.  This gives the works an almost psychedelic style and make them interesting to look at for long periods of time.

Why she inspires me?
Besides being an amazing female artist that has managed to make it big in the world,  Stark's ability to take something as simple as paper and create these intricate and eye-popping sculptures is truly inspiring.  The dedication Stark must put into each one of her sculptures is also something that I admire.  Stark is able to mess with the viewer's mind and has mastered the art of paper craft and I am glad I accidentally stumbled upon her work.
